Real names and fandom: Some really unfunny bruhahaha Er, yeah. Where to start? There is so much backstory to this I don't have the full idea of and probably never will. But I became aware of it when a friend linked me to ithiliana, who says: The purpose of this post is to call out somebody who actively seeks to harm other fans. She lies. She outs fans by connecting their real life identities with their fannish identities. She is trying to make money from a site which is billed as "history" and which contains lies, damn lies, and misinformation as well as the public outing of fans which, despite her claims, she will not remove if asked, not if the person asking fits her definition of an "influential" fan although many influential fans are *not* outed in the journal. Fairly strong language - and the target of it someone who was on my flist up until this. I've never had any negative dealings with her, but I have defriended her now because I am extremely uncomfortable with what she did in the now deleted entry on fanthropology. Clearly, there's a whole lot of other stuff going on too - backstory, agendas, grudges, bias, the debate over OTW (which I remain uncomfortable about, but stay on the fence) and I'm getting a headache. The post I linked to have a lot of links and information if you want to read up. There are also some defenders showing up in the comments. metafandom is also involved - the rule change here is specifically come from this situation and they've linked to several opinions on it here. If you missed the fanthropology post, this post explains what went on. To summarize from that: apparently the owner got her hands on [lj name]'s real name. And added said name, and several details of her offline and professional life, to the FanHistory page about her. And if someone tries to remove [lj name]'s real-life details, saying "she doesn't want these things linked, please stop," the owner reverses the edits and restores the revealing page. And when challenged, said owner made a giant post to fanthropology proclaiming your real-life details fair game if you've ever posted on an archive, made an online journal, or joined a message board. Again, there are some defenders in the comments - I haven't found a post that actively defends what was done, or I would link it in the interest of balance. If there is such a thing in all this. ETA: Oh, here's one defending FanHistory and the posting of RL name. I spent far too much time yesterday trying to get a sense of this all, and I pretty much only got a headache and an urge to cheer self up by ordering stuff on Amazon. I think it's time for the wankshelter bar again. Anyone want a drink? Someone make me write Adama/Roslin fic fast before my brain gets devoured by really unfunny stuff, PLEASE? Drabble meme First five comments with a fandom, pairing or single character, and prompt will get a drabble. If you ask for something you need to post this on your journal and offer five of either art or fic that you do, too.
Fandoms available:
- LotR (but of course :P) - Bleach - Saiyuki - FMA - SG-1 - SGA (though I've yet to catch up with last season) - Doctor Who (I'm limiting that to Ten only, though, cos I'm still too hazy on Four and don't know the others well enough) - I will also offer up any TADers character.
Also: be gentle with any manga requests. I've never written anything for them before. ¬¬ *looks nervous*
ETA: All requests now taken and meme now closed. Thanks to all who responded! :D |

Bleach: chapter 318 You know through the first couple of pages I thought I already knew what this post would consist of. It would be but a couple of phrases and they would be: "You know what? I don't CARE!" and would then descend into rant about how Ichigo has entirely failed to engage me as a reader beyond the first main Soul Society arc and that, frankly, it's the rest of the cast, most particularly the Shinigami, that are the stars of this manga. And THEN... well, Kubo never fails to surprise, does he? Just when you're getting ready throw rocks at his head he decides to do the Right Thing. ( spoilers )And of course I have NO hurt/comfort bunnies about Byakuya actually proving to be fallible for once and Renji being traumatised by the sight and fighting like a demon over his broken body. None at all. ¬¬ ... STRINGER PUT THE RABBIT FOOD DOWN, DAMN YOU! :P |

I got stuff back from the Air Force recruiting office today, and it was forms like whoa. So many. I went cross eyed upon opening the envelope. And ... this is just the begining. I haven't even sat the test yet, let alone gone for selection. Speaking of, the test. Yes. Kind of worring me. Particularly the bit testing instrument reading. I don't know what the instruments in a cockpit are or how to read them I don't really know what I was thinking when I applied. Yes, flying would be awesomesauce. Xtreme Awesomesauce, even. But... yeah, freaking me out a little. But uni would prolly do that too, so what can you do really? Current Mood: intimidated |

The Hairy Man and the Sack: Chapter Excerpt Another text dump. This is part of chapter 2 of the current Hairy Man draft, which is the fifth. A little explanation is required. Babay, the Russian bogeyman, is friends with the Italian bogey L'uomo Nero. After the meeting of the bogeyman Family--at which they were given an unpleasant assignment--L'uomo Nero vanishes. Babay, knowing that L'uomo Nero is less than stable, needs to find him before he does something idiotic. But even a fellow bogey can't follow a sack-bearing bogeyman when he doesn't want to be found, so Babay goes to the one spirit who can always find anything . . . Vile fail, tinhat logic, a Hitler sitcom, links of interest and other stuff "There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing innocent children," says UK MP. FAIL says I. Massive, massive fail. Words fail me for the fail. Scary thing I found out via TvTropes' brilliant I Am Not Making This Up page - there was an actual TV show called Heil Honey I'm Home! You can see it on YouTube here. I. Yes. Er. Words kinda fail me a bit there too. Whoever put Adama/Roslin on the They Do section at TVTropes ears an awww from me, though. Awww."Question: if you were aware that the usa was responsible for a hidden CNS chemical warfare holocaust within itself from corruption and crime, which newspapers would you go to with the story?" starts a poster. It doesn't get any saner from there. That also lead me to find this actual tinfoil hat experiment, which is made of win. Hee. An interesting opinion on women as rewards/sacrifice, with spoilers for Hellboy II, The Dark Knight and Dr Horrible. I'll let you make your own mind up about that - but I do think portrayal of women have long ways to go yet in the various media. Wow, they caught Radovan Karadzic. This another one of Serbia's steps towards the EU? Hmm. This concludes the link service for the day. In other stuff: - Got a BSG book and comic I had ordered in the mail today. Shiny! But I wish there was more stuff out there and I really want an Adama/Roslin '08 t-shirt. I'm easy to lure in, so where's the shiny merchandise? - Things You Do Not Want To Discover While Naked and About to Get in the Shower #66: A very irate wasp. Eeeeek. - Summer sun! Please stay this time, you starry tease. - You Know You Work An Awesome Place When... #23: Ice cream for all, courtesy the company. Twice in two weeks, too. - WoW raiding starting up again, with Black Temple last night. Went okay, but I think some of us are a bit bored with stuff. Bring on the expansion! And you all? What teenagers can do So not too long ago there was a discussion about if the ages of the Animorphs are believable. Well, I've been trying to read Stephen King's The Dark Tower series and am currently on Wizard & Glass. In that book (which is almost entirely backstory that they've hinted at in the first three books), the main character is 14. The oldest any of his friends may be is 16, including his love interest.
Really, it was just sort of a slap back to reality when I realized I'm seven years older than the main character in this story. (As it sometimes is when I remember i'm now a fair bit older than the Animorphs.)
Well, really it was just a bizarre realization- we have a Roland Deschain who is maybe a year or so older than the Animorphs. Which leads to the obvious question of- Roland's ka-tet versus the Animorphs? Who would win? Would the gunslinger be screwed?
Another question- that I've probably asked before, but my computer is so without internet it's painful and this post is coming from the on-campus computer lab- does anyone know if Take These Broken Wings is still up anywhere? That used to be my favorite fanfic of all time. I'm currently killing time before class reading another one (from a rec list in the community), but I sort of want to re-read that one.
edit: I fail at teh html early in the morning. |

I've decided to start grooming myself for the entrapment of a mate. Boy does it sound more exciting when I put it that way. The way I have decided to begin conducting this is through the power of smell. As soon as I find and appropriately incite initial interest in a male of my choosing, I shall pick an opportune moment to wear BPAL's Plunder while coating my lips in Lush's Lip Squeak. It is my hypothesis that no man with a pulse can resist a woman who smells like a pirate ship and apple pie, which are two of every red-blooded American male's favorite things - or maybe every red blooded American female's favorite things, seeing as how every time I caught a whiff of myself on the way home from Lush I was bowled over by the overwhelming urge to snog myself senseless. You can imagine how the schematics involved in that would be challenging.
I've gotten into the bad habit of telling people they don't brush their hair correctly. I'm a tenderhead and always have been, so when I was little my mother had to brush my very very long hair very carefully each morning, starting from the tips and working her way up to the roots. Hence why today I always brush my hair carefully and in sections, starting from the tips and undoing the knots gently until I make my way up to the roots and can sweep a brush straight through my hair. The noise that it makes when other people pull a brush from the root to the tips of recently washed or unbrushed hair is horrendous to me. The sound of breaking hair makes me grind my teeth and want to snatch their hairbrush away before they do their hair any more damage. I've always been a hair person. Needless to say, some people do not like it when you snatch their hairbrushes away from them or tell them that they're conducting a basic element of hygiene wrong, so this has caused me to gain some recent enmity. I like to think I'm not that bossy, but when it comes to the treatment of hair I'm sort of a technique elitist.
I hate it when girls who I think are beautiful insist they're not. Recently I developed a character, a plus-sized-model figured lady who I think is just about the most beautiful woman I've ever made up, and hearing girls whose figures remind me of hers complain about how fat they are makes me sad. I feel like I can't say so, though, since I'm thin, like I don't have a right to say what's pretty and what's not because to all appearances, I cave to the beauty standard with my eating of good foods (apart from the days I eat whole bags of oreos in one go) and my liking of yoga and swimming and running around and playing outdoor stuff which nobody will play with me because being a 12 year old kid in a 21 year old body sucks. Really, like all women, I could either like what I do with my body (which is yoga and running around and other fun stuff), or I could love the way my body looks (which would require lots more sitting around and eating pie and some breast implants to keep in porportion). I think I'm fine the way I am, even if I'm not my own beauty ideal, but I wish girls that I think are so pretty would believe me when I told them so instead of brushing me off as a giver of false compliments. Why should I be giving false compliments? There are skinny girls I think are pretty too. Most people who know me know that. There's a difference between being fat and being curvy - it's mostly proportion, but most girls I know who are don't care when I tell them so. |

Oddly enough, I find myself more excited about the Avatar fandom now that the show is over than I did while it was still running. Before now, all the shipwank and hatery-disguised-as-debate kept me mostly out of everywhere except for capslock_atla, where all wank is hilarious and has a tasty creme filling, but now that the series is over, there's so much speculation about far more interesting things to be had. Not that I expect the shipwars to go away - just to settle down a bit. Now that everything that's going to be answered has been answered, everyone can start concentrating on the interesting ( and spoilery questions that Mike 'n Bryan left unanswered. )So, basically, it'll become the Lord of the Rings fandom. The outside-the-movie fandom, anyway. I could totally stand to join that fandom. |

animorphs as cultural time capsule Hello, all!
First of all, I want to thank whoever posted all the books as text files awhile back. I downloaded the zip file at the time and kind of forgot about it, but in February I left for my Peace Corps placement in the Dominican Republic. I'm a little short on English-language books around here, but I rediscovered the Animorph books on my laptop and rejoiced!
I recently finished re-reading the entire series (including all the side books) and quite enjoyed the experience, although I had forgotten (and in some cases never read in the first place) some of the more ridiculous things that happened in the series. (Helmacrons, anyone?)
But I also enjoyed the books on a new level: painstakingly detailed cultural time capsule of the mid-to-late 1990s in America. It's all there. AOL, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Baywatch... even the way she always described every store that the mall contained. Amazing. Future anthropologists could probably reconstruct 1990s America solely from these books. |

The salient points of Boz's Monday I writted some Penny! Yay! *throws streamers* Seemingly-asleep-and-yet-able-to-make-ru de-comments!Bilbo is made of win. Not sure how canon he is. It's been SO long since I last wrote Bilbo (literally YEARS, people! YEARS! o_O). Betas? Be warned - random scene might be winging its way to you at some point soon. ¬¬ Walking 20 mins to my friend's so Bozling could go play for a couple of hours and then 20 mins back (pushing Madam in the buggy all the way back) while a Good Thing in terms of exercise was a Bad Thing in terms of lurgi. A Tolkien-esque thought Do you know what has just occurred to me? That I've been thinking of 'The Last Homely House' in entirely the wrong terms. Bear with me a moment, because this may well prove my stupidity. But then you already knew I was either stupid or daft (or both), so nothing new there, right? :P Anyway, all these years, I've thought of the word 'Last' as indicating it was the last friendly place before you got to the mountains and thus East where you could face Eru Alone knew what. Now it may be it's been WAY too long since I last read The Hobbit and Gandalf or someone (or perhaps even Bilbo) explains exactly that, but if that's so... then isn't that a tad harsh on Thranduil? And indeed even Galadriel. There were places just as friendly in the East. Thus it occurred to my fevered, sleep-addled brain over breakfast this morning and, lo, I had a revelation. Perhaps the 'last' actually meant IN THE OTHER DIRECTION, ie. for those coming FROM the East to sail West - so it was the last friendly place before you hit the Grey Havens and were bundled aboard ship. I feel like either way I'm being supremely dense about this: that either I've forgotten something from The Hobbit that means my initial assumption is, in fact, the correct one, or else I've had entirely the wrong idea ever since childhood. And yet, if the former IS correct, as I say, it's surely a tad hard on Mirkwood. Though, that said... giant spiders in the woods and orcses in the hills doesn't tend to inspire that much 'homeliness', does it? :P *sigh* Yes, yes, I'll stop farting about and knuckle down to Penny now. Honest. ¬¬ Current Mood: confused |

Sex for the not-so-young, fandom stuff and hating some mushed ship names Weirdest dream in a while: My cat gets shot. I take out his heart to get it beating again and manage to by pressing it a bit and fiddling with it like lego and then I put it back in. But I'm not sure I have fitted the pieces quite right even if the cat is breathing again, so I take the cat to the vet. AS YOU DO. Also, Stabæk beat Fredrikstad 1-0. (They really play today - will I be clairvoyant?) I think this dream is sparked by the cat curling up in bed with me (very wet! We had an nightly rain-storm) and of course that I watched football just before bed. But still. If you're friends with aj, a friend is hosting her a 42 Days in Hell -athon with various fandoms. I immidiately wanted to write Adama/Roslin stuck in a cell for 42 days and how they'd cope, but that's because I'm me. (Don't you just love friends that do that sort of thing for you, though?) (Also got my ficathon fic back from beta and now I have to wait until Friday at the earliest to post. This is the disadvantage of finishing early and having no patience. Bugger. But on the bright side, it's my longest BSG fic so far.) Speaking of BSG, a return in January seems fairly confirmed. If you trust SciFi, that is. Hmm. I want my BSG, dammit! ( Cam ponders older people and sex, not really TMI )I rather want an Adama/Roslin icon with 'Say no to ageism! Say yes to Mom/Dad sex!' now. Finally, Avatar finale seems to have caused shipping wank, but since I am don't watch it and don't really care, what I want to know is who else hates mushed ship names like burning? (I saw Adama/Roslin made into Rodama the other day and wondered where I had left my napalm.) Quite some time ago I invited people on my flist to add hating mushed ship names to their interests and now I do it again. I'm not beyond bribing. Current Mood: artisticCurrent Music: Norway |

Animophs reread #14 The Unknown Since the regular poster doesn't seem to be back yet, I'll pick it up again. A story like this had to come eventually; a series involving aliens wouldn't be complete without a foray into a secret area that's obviously meant to be Area 51. Throw in yeerk-infested horses, a racetrack visit, and a battle at The Gardens to complete the fun.
I've heard mixed thoughts on this book. I'm not quite sure what my conclusions are at the moment. There were some fun parts, like someone-Cassie? I forget-saying it's a strange world when a woman called Crazy...Alice, is it? forgot again, sorry...is at least partly right. And some of the interaction at the base was funny, though risky.
For one question, I have to wonder if the yeerks ever infested any other animals besides horses and humans. And a bigger question, what do we think about what the secret turned out to be? Should it have been different?
I'm not able to come up with any prompts this time, sorry. But if anyone else can, feel free to post.
edit: d'oh I forgot the tag, sorry
We should all know the rules by now; I'm not a stickler for posting them each week like our regular re-read person but I do think it wise to at least remind people to follow them.

*flails* See, this is what having the lurgi does to you. Actually, no, scrap that. This is what having the lurgi AND having had a madly busy week with guests all over the place (and babysitting for two days) does to you.
IT EATZ UR BRAYNZ!

Byakuya/Renji will NOT LEAVE ME ALONE! *wibble* AND I NEED TO WRITE PENNY! *flail* BUT OH TEH HAWT!
...
Gah, it's like Teh Attack of Teh EVOL all over again. (TADers fans will know whereof I speak... *looks shifty* ¬¬)
The more I think of it, the more I'm convinced that those two are the 35 of Bleach. Opposites and fire and power games. Only Renji is WAY more subtle about than Gojyo. He would take it for so long and then slowly turn the tables while Byakuya collapses into a heap. Cos Byakuya's so up himself he can't let go except in salami slices. Gah, it's SO Sanzo. Only without the swearing and randomly shooting people. Same arrogance and contempt for everyone around him though.
But I digress. ... TEH HAWT! SRSLY! SO DAMN HAWT! |

Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Well, it was all over the flist and I was about to post and ask 'What the heck is everyone on about?' when niggsyisabore dumped the link in a comment for me and poked me into watching it. So I did. I liked it. I think. I'm still not sure if the ending was wholly successful, though - think I agree with greyladybast on that one. Very good performances from the three main characters, though Mal Reynolds didn't really have a lot to play with - rather two dimensional character. Also could not stop thinking 'Good grief, Captain Tightpants has put on a pound or two, hasn't he? He really should not be in that tight a T-shirt,' but then I'm hardly one to talk. :P Happens to the best of us. It was not until Act III that the penny dropped, though. Up till that point something about it had been bugging me as horribly (no pun intended) familiar, and I could not place it until suddenly I realised: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Of which I was a HUGE fan in my late teens, even owning the 'audience participation' LP and knowing it backwards. So, yeah, I thought of that and Little Shop of Horrors too. The whole thing is very much in that vein, only with a slightly more modern take on the genre, of course. As such, frankly, I think the ending should not have gone the way it did, but should have gone for the more pantomime version. Would have been dafter, perhaps, but far more fitting and worked a lot better. E.g: ( cut for the very few left who have not yet seen this thing )For anyone who has not yet had this link bombarded at them a thousand times on their flists: here you go. |

"The status is not quo." EEP. DOCTOR HORRIBLE'S SINGALONG BLOG IS SO MUCH WIN. The only, only problem I have is that since I haven't seen Nathan Fillion in much except Firefly and now this, I think everything he appears in is Mal on a job. Seeing him in Desperate Housewives was a shock. 'What's Mal doing here? Hmm, must be a core planet. Are they blackmailing the residents? Or is it some scheme to infiltrate the society and then pull a grand heist? Does that mean everyone else is there too? Have they redecorated Serenity in pastels to match the colour scheme?' And in other news I rearranged the pantry today. Hah. I was only planning to do the bottom shelves with all the tins and whatnot, then decided that the whole place needed rearranging. El, still in pajamas, looking at the pantry: This is the bit in the sitcom where I say 'it won't take long' and it cuts to me four hours later, half-crazy and surrounded by cans, isn't it? El's brother: Oh yeah. But I managed to buck the trend and it only took me a couple of hours. I expect to get lots of panicked calls in which other family members demand to know why I put the rice next to the tins of tuna, forchrissake, and where the hell is the paprika stored now? AND. OMG. THE OOD. PLANET OF THE OOD. PERCY, YOU OOD-MAN THING. EDMUND WOULD LAUGH SO HARD IF HE KNEW. I like the Ood. They're like puppies with tentacles, and really quite adorable.
