Festivities.
Does anyone know of an English custom which apparently involves walking around the streets with your face painted green, dressed in strips of fabric (also green), carrying long sticks (which are clacked together at intervals) and accompanied by a person dressed as a ten-foot tree with a crown of flowers, while accompanied by an accordian and a drum? If it helps, the accordian was playing a rather medieval-sounding tune, and the tree had strips of fabric attached.

Um...just such a procession walked through the streets from Redland Park about five minutes ago. They took exactly the same route I remember seeing them take two or three years ago. The music was nice, but it was all a bit bewildering.

Standard first of May festivities, I think.

May Day, then? (As in maypoles and May Queen, not help-our-ship-is-sinking.)

Yeah, I think so. The green is what gave it away. And the ten-foot tree - kinda wish I could have seen that last one.

Yeah. *Snickers.* You know that funny shape of the British crown -kind of with several bits bent in towards the middle? Imagine that, only the arches were made of flowers. And it was on top of a ten-foot semi-conical leafy thing. A sight to behold indeed.

Oh good lord. One would have to have an amazing amount of confidence in order to walk around in one of those things.

Yeah, you would. There were a couple of people steering it onto the pavement when cars came by, but even so.

Hm... Some kind of Morris thing? Otherwise, I back up twelve_pastels.

I think Morris is white shirts and bells. That's what Discworld books tell me, anyway.

Do you get weird festivals like this where you live?

I live in Hong Kong. We have wierd festivals, or at least they're wierd to me, but they're mostly religious ones. They go on at the temples and you always know what they're for based on the date and because Hong Kong has so much city and people from all over the world they often pass by unnoticed. Mainland China might have different stuff though.

More like it probably does; regional customs are common over here and seem to occure quite widely. You know -one town does this on this day; another town two miles away does something quite different.
