Why I Read.
There are various things to be said for reading a book, just as there are various things to be said for watching television. For me, however, the book has prevailed. Here's a few reason's why.

Conveniance. I, as a book-lover, can carry half an hour of teenagers turning into animals to fight aliens around in my backpack. You cannot fit a television into a schoolbag. The television-watcher is therefore unable to snatch five minutes of entertainment in between classes -no problem if you like books.

Silence. Strange as it sounds, you don't need to make a noise to read a book. TV makes noise. Moreover, if you are reading a book, you don't get sound interference (being unable to hear what a character is saying).

Words. I like words. I like the way they fit together. I like the way you can shape them into elegant arguments. I like the way a particular word in a particular place will sharply bring into focus exactly what the author is saying about a scene or a person. I like the way sentances are structured. I enjoy seeing the words fit together.
Odd as it may appear, though, I often don't exactly see the words. I see the meaning. This happens when you read a lot: Though some words stand out, mostly they just slot neatly into place to create a neatly ordered whole.

Rereading. Sometimes I will read a particular phrase over and over, because I like it. Sometimes I will flip back in a book to see if I missed anything.

Freedom. The book doesn't force the images down your throat. It gives you leeway to add nuances to expression and features and voices. It allows to to form an image around a few central features. Read a good book, and watch the dusty streets of the city rise up in your mind, hear the distant music, experience the thrilling flight of a bird...

The book tells you what someone is thinking. It's there, on the page. You don't have to guess. You know.

Overall, though, I just like reading because...I just like reading.

And that's why I'm waiting impatiently for my Amazon delivery to arrive.

I agree with you on all the points here, although I still like my tv. :D One of my favourite things about books is that you can grab them and hide away for a while, and apart from the pages turning and your occasional reactions out loud, you won't be found. I love the physicality of the books themselves - the weight in my hand, the smell of the pages, how cool they are on a hot day, the little spots of ink and splodges - you don't get that with tv or movies.

The book doesn't force the images down your throat. Yes, and that's why they're wonderful. I'm very wary of watching movies adapted from books until I've read the books first, otherwise I have mental images of the characters as they're played in the movies. It happened with Fellowship of the Ring and while the characterisations were mostly excellent, I would rather have gone in with my own ideas about them.

I think I'll go and read it again now. *wanders off*
